The Cypriot weaver

  • • Julia uses traditional weaving looms
  • • The past and present merge in her objects
  • • Her work has been exhibited internationally

Julia Astreou studied Textiles and Fashion Design in the United Kingdom. Working at the Cyprus Handicrafts Service for two decades, she became fond of traditional weaving. She left her job and started researching and experimenting, creating innovative pieces of art and objects made of woven textiles, which bring together tradition and modernity. Her pieces are unique and authentic; they have been exhibited in international exhibitions in Poland, Italy, Lithuania, Sweden, Belgium and the United Kingdom. Her work in “textile art and design and research in traditional textiles” was awarded the silver prize of the “Arts, Sciences, Lettres” in Paris. Julia can be found in her studio located in a charming traditional house in the central square of Kaimakli, Nicosia.

Turkish

These handwoven floor cushion covers were inspired by traditional Turkish textile designs. The bright vibrant colours give the design a carefree look. The colours are enriched with in-woven tufts of wool and stripes of lurex fabric to bring an oriental look to the design.

Lampshade

This lampshade is based on traditional Cypriot Asproploumia textiles with in-woven cane and cotton. The Asproploumi weave is an open type lace weave achieved by twisting and interweaving threads, which in this case allows the light to flow out subtly when the light is on.

Sisal series

This series of handwoven table runners is made with cotton and in-woven brown sisal fibre. They have an interesting texture due to the contrast between the materials. Their rhythmical pattern has a contemporary minimal look, which makes them suitable for many types of interiors, ranging from contemporary to classical.

Signs of History

This handwoven wall hanging, entitled "Signs of History" (of Cyprus), represented Cyprus in the 15th International Triennial of Tapestry, Poland, 2016. The formation of the design is laborious as it involves counting the warp threads and placing the coloured among them.
