Material matters

  • • Els loves old techniques such as chasing
  • • Shape comes before the function
  • • She strives to add something extra

Through workshops and personal research, Els Vansteelandt has developed her own style. At first she took a course with Emile Souply, one of Belgium's pioneers of artistic jewellery. Later she did international courses with Ruud Peeters and more recently, with Giovanni Corvaja. Doing so, she constantly improves her technical skills. Although she focused on jewellery at first, she later discovered that she could also express her creativity through objects. Since 2010, she runs her own creative lab, redesigned by Filip Janssens, in Brussels. “The Henry van de Velde Award by Design Flanders for my cutlery Pik Nik and the opportunity to show it at the World Best Design Exchange in Seoul are among my most precious memories."

This sterling silver bowl was chased from a single sheet of fine silver 999. To move the metal and to change the essence of silver is an important aspect in Els Vansteelandt’s sculptural works as well as in her jewellery.

The emotional impulses that inspired Els Vansteelandt’s design for this pair of 24ct fine gold earrings, came directly from the properties of the precious metal, guided by the metal during its shaping, exploring its possibilities. The physical properties play an important role in her creative process. Their boundaries and obstacles provide new challenges and ideas.

This 18ct gold ring is part of Els Vansteelandt’s Hold The Line collection. Els Vansteelandt started this collection fascinated by the variety, structure and aesthetic beauty of the wrought-iron balcony railings in Andalusia. Her goal was to translate those fluid lines into her work and to create jewellery crafted in one rolling, curling line, without interruption, from beginning to end.

Nature is an important source of inspiration to Els Vansteelandt’s work. As such, seed pods has led her to the creation of this pair of hand shaped gold earring. To suggest lightness and fragility she milled 22k gold until it was wafer thin, in doing so the earrings also become comfortable to wear by their lightness.
