Testing her own patience

  • • Straw marquetry dates back to the 17th century
  • • Valérie worked for many years with master Lison de Caunes
  • • Some of her pieces take many months to make

At the age of 33 Valérie Colas des Francs decided she wanted to leave her career in marketing in order to work with her hands, but she was afraid she wouldn’t have enough patience for a manual profession. That proved to be the case when she took a course in stained glass. Then, determined to put her patience to the ultimate test, she decided to pursue an internship in straw marquetry, “because it’s meticulous, detailed work. I told myself if I am patient enough to work with this, I can change jobs”. When she first arrived to train at the workshop of French master Lison de Caunes, she “fell in love with straw” and knew instantly this was what she wanted to do. She stayed with de Caunes for 14 years before opening her own studio.

Petites lampes « avec mon chapeau de paille »

Thin strips of coloured straw are meticulously laid onto brass lampshades designed by British lighting designer Gong. The patterns and designs of the small lamps drew inspiration from a straw hat (chapeau de paille).

Applique murale : Demi Corolle

The aluminium structure of this hexagonal wall light has been carefully inlaid with strips of brown straw. The lampshade is designed so that it can be installed facing either upwards or downwards. It can be created in different colours and from a choice of motifs, upon request.

Luminaire Pop-Sobre

The exterior surfaces of this aluminium lamp are finely decorated with straw marquetry, with pink fuchsia leather on the interior. The inlay is quite sober in its overall monochromatic design. However, small orange and pink coloured inserts are reminiscent of pop art. When turned off, the lamp has quite a discreet presence that comes to life and warms up when lit.

Table basse Esprit Art-Déco

The surface of this wooden coffee table has been decorated with an intricate monochromatic straw inlay in a style reminiscent of Art Deco. The brown marble effect plays with the viewers’ senses, creating an impression of volume, while three straw marquetry circles, cut in two by a central column, confuse one’s sense of perspective.

Hélicoïde Lumineux

Valérie’s first exhibition was held in 2007 at Clos Lucé, Leonardo da Vinci’s last home. She drew inspiration for this mobile sculpture from his sketches and his prototype for a “helicopter”. The helicoid form plays with the notion of movement of the spiral, colour and volume.
