The path to illumination

  • • Illumination is a medieval technique of painting on parchment
  • • Materials include extra fine pigments, gouache and sometimes gold leaf
  • • Sophie uses parchment that is typically made of goatskin

Sophie Theodose always loved history and Romanesque art, so it was natural that she would come across illuminations from an early age. However she decided to study fashion and went on to work in the fashion industry for close to 15 years. One day, visiting a local exhibition, she chanced upon a woman exhibiting a few illuminations, and realised it was possible to do this for a living, that “there are people who do dare to this!” Certain this was what she wanted to do, she abandoned the fashion industry and contacted Benoit Cazelle, an illumination artist in Normandy, who took her on as an apprentice. “For me it was obvious. This was what I wanted to do, it just took me a while to get there,” she says.

In Between Lakes

Entrelacs is a sculpture made up of six scrolls of parchment surrounding a white goatskin parchment pedestal. The scrolls are decorated with patterns evoking the sea, with the gold and blue colours rising elegantly up the parchment like waves.

Copper Garden

This piece was inspired by Sophie’s view of the garden from the ground floor of her house. The branches and leaves are made of rose copper oxide leaf, outlined in dark ink so that they stand out from the background while conserving their lightness.

In May 2015

This piece draws its inspiration from the traditions of the Middle Ages and the refinement of the Gothic era. The flower motifs recall the poets Pierre de Ronsard and François de Malherbe, whose works celebrated the ephemeral beauty of life. En Mai 2015 thus pictures a rose that has already blossomed, fragile yet perennial.
