From tree to table

  • • Sebastian's works often use wood from his own woodland in Kent
  • • He has used the craft of swilling to highlight its endangered status
  • • He made his first piece of furniture for his grandmother when he was eight

When Sebastian Cox was a child, his parents built a business restoring traditional timber-framed houses, which gave him a taste of how to combine the creative and the practical in the world of work. It also engendered a deep appreciation and understanding of historical design and making. “We use traditional means of making to create contemporary pieces, complemented by digital technology,” he says. So successful has he been that his name is now synonymous with sustainable furniture making. At the heart of the studio’s ethos is Sebastian’s desire to champion British woodlands, and his work encapsulates the phrase “from tree to table”.

Subtle textures and thoughtful details are the hallmarks of Sebastian’s designs, handmade in his south-east London workshop. The armoire combines London plane, woven English sycamore and drawn glass and features neat brass pins. The curved sliding screen of the sideboard was woven from English ash, and the cabinet and shelves in English tiger oak enhance its beauty. The armoire uses traditional timber frame construction joints and provides ample storage space with shelves, four solid drawers and a hanging rail.

Pedestal table

A single spectacular board of London plane was used to make the distinctive table top, which stands on a pedestal base made of English ash. Part of the Editions collection, only a limited number of these tables are produced by Sebastian’s south-east London workshop.

Hewn Stool

The stool is made from well-managed crops of English ash and hand-coppiced Kentish hazel, kept in the round. The legs were hand-hewn with an axe to a tapering point, revealing the white hazel wood beneath the bark. Each leg has been neatly wedged, making the stool strong and light.
