Thinking outside the glass box

  • • Zuzana creates dynamic pieces of glass fused with other substances
  • • She experiments with materials including fibreglass and basalt
  • • She won the Young Glass 2017 prize in Denmark

Growing up, Zuzana Kubelkova would wander through her father’s glass workshop, sporadically experimenting with glass. Also a keen piano player, when the time came to decide what to study, she had to choose between piano and glasswork. Her passion for glass and perhaps a certain reticence towards the idea of hours of piano practice led her to pick glass. While studying at J. E. Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem, under the guidance of her master Itilia Bilek, Zuzana began to experiment with materials such as fibreglass and basalt. Experimentation with unconventional materials has become a defining feature of her work, and she constantly seeks new approaches.

These glasses were created as a study in colour. Hand-blown pieces of cut glass are overlaid to create different colour tones. The immediate effect is an illusion of multiple layers of glass.
