Exploring colour in clay

  • • Chloë's tool of choice is the potter’s wheel
  • • She creates sophisticated and understated forms
  • • She won the 2018 RDS Craft Award Bursary

Chloë Dowds works almost exclusively with the alluring material of porcelain. She is inspired by the beauty, mystery and rich history of the material itself. She creates work that looks effortless in its simplicity, but that requires a craftsperson’s extensive skill and patience to execute. The interaction of colour within her pieces creates an experience of calm and order. Her restrained palette and use of texture, combined with the elemental material of clay, create a resonance that is almost meditative. Alongside her more sculptural work, Chloë brings her knowledge of colour to a range of homeware which also encapsulates her ability to produce work with balance and understated beauty.

Porcelain espresso mugs

These wheel-thrown espresso mugs have been designed to be as tactile as possible. Chloë added a spiral in the soft porcelain to create movement and underneath each handle is an indentation, somewhere for your hands to discover. Every aspect has been carefully thought through to create a mug that is super light with a thin drinking rim. Finally, she polished the base of each mug, leaving the porcelain feeling like marble.

Tall porcelain vase

This wheel-thrown grey Herend Porcelain vase with orange inlay details is glazed inside, and unglazed, and polished outside. Chloë made this vase in residence at the International Ceramics Studio, Kecskemét, Hungary in August 2019. The orange inlay gives the impression that the line goes right through the piece. This vessel is part of a series inspired by the colour experiments of Josef Albers.
