A lifetime passion for leather

  • • The rich saddlery tradition of Andalucia is central to Francisco's work
  • • His workshop has restored harnesses all over Europe
  • • He considers leather to be in our collective genes

Francisco Dorantes has loved the equestrian world since he was a child, even though there was no tradition of it in his family. At the same time, he was fond of everything he could make with his hands, so at the age of 18 he created his own workshop. He trained with various local leather artisans in Lebrija, his native city, and in Seville, learning leatherwork, shoemaking, saddlery and harness making – what in Spain is called 'enganche'. During that time he fell in love with the rich saddlery tradition in this region of Andalucia. Today, 15 people work in his workshop. His work also includes restoration and historical research for private collections, with clients coming from Germany, the UK, France and Spain.
