A contemporary vision of mosaic art

  • • Laura and Mohammed run the Carraro Chabarik workshop
  • • They master all traditional techniques with a contemporary style
  • • Their customers range from individuals to furniture brands

Mohamed Chabarik and Laura Carraro established their workshop in the medieval heart of Udine in 2006, after their training at the prestigious Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli (Friuli’s Mosaic School), a reference point in the world for the dissemination of the art of mosaic making. The Carraro Chabarik workshop creates works of artistic research and commissions, including jewels, furnishing items and architectural projects. They skillfully handcraft every single piece that they create, using a unique combination of centuries-old techniques, traditional tools and materials such as: stones, marbles, smalto and gold leaves, and more contemporary, experimental elements.

Gioielli CC - Pantelleria #1

This pendant was born after a visit to Pantelleria, a volcanic island in the extreme south of Italy, in the middle of the Mediterrean Sea. Laura & Mohamed jewels are handcrafted one-off pieces, in which a silver frame encloses micro mosaics, created with precious Venetian smalti and gold leaves.

Mappamondo

The glass used for the mosaic tiles of this work is a precious kind, produced exclusively in Venetian furnaces and is called Venetian smalto. The vibrant blue of the sea, contrasting with the oxidized cooper, was obtained by mixing many different shades of blue tiles.

Il mondo è bello perché è vario

This world map was commissioned by a couple of passionate travellers. Each Venetian smalti present in this mosaic has its own shape and colour. A great variety of carefully selected marble stones from all over the world were added to the composition, allowing Laura & Mohamed to finely produce their own version of a map.

Spartiacque

This commissioned wall piece was inspired by mountain landscapes from the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, in particular a place called Spartiacque. Spartiacque, watershed in English, is a geographical term used to describe an area that separates waters flowing to different rivers. It is also used to describe a turning point in a situation. This double meaning is depicted in this mosaic made of precious Venetian smalti.
